I managed to sort out the problem thanks to this post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1355385 and used Ubuntu without any problem. Furthermore, I noticed when I ran the setup command that the file stage1 was found at /grub/stage1 and not /boot/grub/stage1 (fortunately, the setup command automatically tries multiple locations).
