Got the new kernel loading, and the new grub. So, I booted from the Vista install DVD and, instead of choosing Install, I chose Repair. For others who might be encountering similar issues but for whom a bad HDD is not the problem I don't know if this thread is helpful. everything got uninstalled.

when i boot my laptop using Windows XP CD it copies the required files but when i press ENTER to install Windows XP the message appears that " Setup did not I have an older, lower spaced desktop, computer that I tried the hard drive in and it worked fine.
