when boot from cd press any key then it is black screen. I think it is present in MBR. However, when I attempted to enter windows, I was given this rather cryptic message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

Kind regards Francis Reply Link Andrew J June 12, 2009, 10:53 amI don't have a setup disk, so I've tried the dd approach, which certainly seems to have removed grub, I I noticed after the installation was complete that the partition scheme was initially in a different order than what is posted - sda1 and sda2 where swaped. In more practical terms this means the BIOS is unable to start executing the kernel because the kernel is not located within the block it can access at boot up time.
Then I can choose to boot Winblows or Linux with two different kernels or memtest. Stage 1.5 was eliminated. GRUB is the reference implementation of the Multiboot Specification, which allows a user to have several different operating systems on their computer at once, and to choose which one to run I did some google search and found a couple of tricks using grub commands.
The main thing is to have a look at what values the Partition Editor (GPartEd probably) gives us for the sizes of the partitions. Presumably this machine is a laptop? any thoughts on how to correct this issue. What I used was testdisk and it worked perfectly. He may have just been telling you that you had a possible corrupt install and reinstalling would be the easiest way to resolve. I now have both grub and grub 2 running in the boot box.

Read/writes are faster at the front of most drives so having a swap that gets used a lot right there so near the start of the drive is perfect. Right click on My Computer, than go properties.
This let me boot into Windows and Windows only. At a complete loss. Will it automatically go to the newly partitioned drives? useful reference i don't know how to set priority for booting..
Reply Link camypaj December 7, 2008, 3:02 amxp + fc6 didn't work with fixboot c: or fixboot [c:], BUT "fixboot" (without parameters) wrote a warning, and then wrote proper boot record. I'll leave it to you to figure out which you need for which recovery console you're using. Always enter bios setup to boot from the device to get to comand prompt ex: (USB, CD, Floppy etc.) Remember to backup all your data before u install any other operating

Now, I want to boot from Windows 7 OS which was already installed along with the Suse 11. An Emergency Boot Disk burned to CD-ROM (Nero does this - floppy emulation) gives you the option of "Starting the computer with CDROM support". http://imagextension.com/grub-loading/grub-loading-error-15-ubuntu.php Your computer will be unable to boot from that drive.
